What is Master of Management?

The¬†Master of Management, also known as MM, is a unique post-graduate Master’s degree that is usually pursued by students who have completed graduate work in a subject area like business management. Students look to this program usually because they have an interest in going into leadership or management roles upon graduation. Though it is a business oriented degree, students from all backgrounds pursue it for its versatility. It is structured in a similar manner to Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Management programs.


As with other higher education programs, an admissions committee looks at several factors to determine worthiness for entrance. These include grade point average (GPA) of undergraduate and graduate work, Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) scores or other acceptable placement tests, letters of recommendation, applicant’s essay, resume and impressions from a personal interview, among other possible requirements.

The committee uses these factors to determine if the applicant possesses the academic discipline, leadership potential, personal character and other pertinent qualities to be successful in the program and to contribute to the program in a positive way.


Every program will be different in terms of course makeup. However, you can expect a certain basic foundation to be found across the board. Classes in management such as Strategic Management, Human Resource Management and Supply Chain Management are likely to be seen. Also, of course, standard business courses will make up a large part of the curriculum. These may be classes such as Business Culture, Entrepreneurship, International Business and Business Law.

Economics and finance are areas needed to become a strong management leaders. Thus, courses like Accounting, Economics, Investments, Financial Reporting and Corporate Finance will probably be requisites. A strong leadership component will be in any Master of Management program, as one of the main goals is to prepare strong leaders for business and other fields. Leadership classes like Leadership and Motivation, Ethical Decision Making, Corporate Communications and Public Relations will be expected. A variety of other coursework areas, including statistics, research and marketing should also be included.


There are a number of structures you may find in an MM program. The more common types of educational structure are part-time, two-year, executive, distance learning or accelerated programs. Younger students with little workplace experience are likely to enter a two-year, distance learning, part-time or accelerated program. These students will likely tackle the core program areas like business and management,then likely choose a specialty area of concentration to complete the program. Specializations may include international business, marketing, finance, marketing management, human resources or strategic management, among others.

For those with considerable experience under their belts, including management roles, the MM program may look quite different and be structure much like that of an executive MBA program. These programs are typically made up to focus on more advanced areas of study like business law, workplace security, employee motivation and corporate crime, to name a few.
